EUROCHAMP-2 is a European project which aims a better integration of simulation chambers for studying atmospheric processes. Eurochmamp is funded within the EC 7th Framework Programme, Section "Support for Research Infrastructures - Integrated Infrastructure Initiative". EUROCHAMP-2 started on May 1, 2009 for a 4 year period and it is the successor of EUROCHAMP-1, from June 1, 2004 until May 31, 2009. Today 14 European Partners are the backbone of this project, which developed a grid of environmental chambers designed for the the scientific investigation of atmospheric chemical processes. EUROCHAMP intends to make better use of these expensive facilities by breaking down boundaries between national research institutions and opening up access to a wider range of researchers.
The EUROCHAMP project has been a success story from its beginning in June 2004. A huge database on environmental chamber experiments has been developed, which is currently being used by many scientists also from outside the consortium for the development and improvement of chemical mechanisms describing the degradation of atmospheric pollutants. Furthermore, within the frame of the project several novel analytical techniques for the detection of trace gases and particulates in the atmosphere have been developed and will be deployed in the future in experiments. In addition, a constant stream of peer-reviewed publications results from the project.
As a new feature in EUROCHAMP-2, we now provide Transnational Access. Transnational Access (TA) within EUROCHAMP-2 provides support for users when they want to use the chambers within the procject. This activity promotes scientific excellence through the mobility of experts and access of research scientists, in particular new users, to the high quality EUROCHAMP-2 infrastructure. Access to the installations is offered free of charge and the cost of the chamber operation is covered through a successful TA proposal.
The major objective of the joint research activities within the EUROCHAMP-2 project is the optimisation and further development of the infrastructures' performance. In order to meet these goals, two corresponding research activities are defined in the EUROCHAMP-2 work programme, namely the development and refinement of analytical equipment and the development of chemical and physical modelling techniques.
